A Bolha – Teatro com Marionetas was conceived in 2016 by artists Ana Mota Ferreira and Manel Bilro, united by a shared fascination with the expressive and symbolic power of puppetry. The project took shape in late 2018, driven by a desire to explore the transformative potential of puppets: their capacity to change, to be changed, and to animate objects beyond human touch. Rooted in artistic research and experimentation, A Bolha investigates the relationship between human and object as a metaphor for social interaction, vulnerability, and shared responsibility.
The company is strongly artist-led and operates according to a distinctive artistic philosophy in which the actor remains visible on stage and interacts openly with the puppet. Actor and puppet are treated as equals within the dramaturgy, emphasising collaboration, transparency, and co-presence rather than illusion or concealment. This approach challenges traditional theatrical hierarchies and invites audiences to critically engage with the creative process itself.
A Bolha contributes to civic space by promoting freedom of artistic expression and recognising the arts as a fundamental tool for democratic citizenship. Through participatory and accessible performances, the company creates spaces for reflection, dialogue, and imagination, encouraging audiences to question norms and explore multiple perspectives. By fostering artistic participation, cultural inclusion, and community engagement, A Bolha demonstrates how contemporary puppetry can function as a platform for free expression, creativity, and active cultural citizenship.
