The Porta do Bairro project was launched in Torres Vedras within the framework of the municipal Integrated Action Plan for Disadvantaged Communities (PAICD) and the Urban Development Strategic Plan (PEDU), with the objective of promoting social inclusion and improving living conditions in the Urban Rehabilitation Area of Encosta de São Vicente. The initiative focused on the acquisition and rehabilitation of a derelict building near the former municipal slaughterhouse, transforming it into a community house that provides cultural, educational, and social support services for local residents.
The project is managed by the Municipality of Torres Vedras in partnership with the Centro Social e Paroquial de Torres Vedras. Its activities are organised around three interconnected thematic units: the Social Participation and Innovation Unit, which encourages civic engagement and cultural initiatives; the Psychosocial Intervention Unit, offering social and psychological support to vulnerable individuals and families; and the Training Unit, dedicated to developing professional, social, and personal skills.
Porta do Bairro strongly reflects key civic space dimensions. It promotes participation by actively involving residents in social and cultural regeneration processes, supports empowerment through training and capacity-building, ensures inclusivity by providing an open and intergenerational space, and strengthens collaboration through partnerships between local authorities, social organisations, and the community.
